 A Pear?
« Thread Started on Jun 11, 2005, 4:53am »

A small auburn-haired girl stood before a large painting, her head tilted to one side. Her crystal blue eyes squinted at the large painting of a fruit bowl as she chewed her bottom lip, considering. It was an awfully strange concept, tickling a pear to get into the Kitchens. Suppose the rumours were untrue?

The girl glanced once over her right shoulder, then her left, checking to see if the hallway was desserted before taking a step forward, blowing long Auburn bangs out of her eyes. Raising an arm, she tickled the pear cautiously, feeling like a fool. Imagine her surprise when the pear giggled and turning into a doorknob. Cara sighed. How could she ever doubt the family secrets? They knew all about NaKaoms, perhaps even more than what the legendary Dumbledore did.

The kitchens were deserted this late at night, even more so now the elves had gone on strike. Unfortunetly, this left the already lost Cara completely helpless. “Well this is nice,” she murmured.

With a groan, Cara stalked away from the door, glancing at the numerous cabinets the adorned the walls of the kitchen. She leaned against a counter, thin stomach rumbling. She hadn't eaten anything since the day before, she needed something and soon or she thought her stomach might begin to eat itself.

Watching the girl go into the kitchens Orion had a wicked idea for a joke. He didn't usually play jokes, but this was too tempting. He followed the girl into the kitchens and crept behind her. He tapped her on the shoulder and in his best professor-esque voice said "What are you doing out of bed at this hour!" he stepped back quickly in case she tried to hit him.

Cara shrieked from the feeling of a tap on her shoulder and the sudden loud voice coming from behind her. She had never been down to the kitchens before but her stomach had forced her to come so it would let her sleep. She really needed to find some food though it might take a while with the elves being on strike and now someone was telling her off.

The girl spun around, her hair falling in front of her eyes as she stared at the boy who had decided to trick her. She originally thought it was a professor and took a note not to point her wand at him, but when she saw the boy she recognised as someone called Orion, her cheeks turned a bright red colour from both anger and embarressment.

She ran forwards and, instead of risking getting in trouble for using unautherised magic, she lunged her clenched fist at Orion, punching him hard on the arm. "I cannot believe you! Why did you do that!?" Cara demanded as she glared at the boy.

She could be quite intimidating when she wanted to be but she wasn't sure of the boy's reactions yet. Maybe he wasn't expecting such force in her punch? But then again, she was seething with anger.

Orion felt the punch, then twisted out of the way of any others that might come this way, "It was a joke, nothing personal, wouldn't have mattered who it was, I would have done it to anyone." he said taken aback by the girls extreme reaction. "You're the Callidas Seeker, aren't you?" he asked calmly.

"What of it?" She asked once she had gained control of her fists. She was longing to hit him again but she knew it would just get her in trouble and she had to admit, it was a little immature. She sighed and cracked her knuckles to try and lessen the pain that was throbbing up her arm from the sharp punch she had given a few moments ago, but instead making it worse. In the end, she just gave up and tried her best to ignore it.

With her other hand, she brushed the hair that had fallen over her eyes, behind her ears so she could see better. It didn't really help much as the light was dim and even the lit tip of her wand didn't illuminate the room to a considerable amount like she thought it would. It was like the darkness was sticking to the shelves, tables and kitchen utensils that lined the walls and wouldn't let go.

"I was just asking." he replied, "Anyway, I'm off, but when we do meet on the Quiddich pitch, I'll win, no matter what you do." and he walked out of the room and back to his common room it had been an interesting encounter no doubt, but he was still bored out of his mind.

Cara stared after him, thinking that he was a strange boy. He had just left and not asked more questions like what most people would, leaving her slightly confused. After a moment, she shrugged and turned around to continue her hunt for food.

Meia had woken up feeling strangely restless, and had decided to have a midnight snack. He slipped through the shadowed hallways and dimly lit stairwells silently, and then it struck him- why exactly were the kitchens, anyway?

The boy ran a hand through his hair, standing in the shadow of a statue, and glanced around. Another student was walking in his direction, and he shrank back. Meia was still new, and very uncertain about himself.

He waited until the other boy had left and moved forward to examine the painting- hadn't the other student opened it, somehow? Then it hit him- his cousin, Kaede, had mentioned something like this. Meia tickled the pear, and it melted into another shape, a doorknob.

Grinning, he slipped in through the door and began surveying the room for food. He wasn't expecting to find a girl there.

Cara turned around expecting to see Orion again, but instead another boy was facing her with a strange expression on his face. "Not here to Joke with me are you? because it has already been done so don' bother" she said rather gloomily. She wasn't having much luck currently, and she was annoyed that she couldn't find any food to quiet her growling stomach. And this was a bloody kitchen! Shows what happens when elves go on strike...They actually hide food from you.

Meia blinked and shook his head, slightly surprised. He looked at her for a moment longer, and then turned away, surveying the room. It was high-ceilinged, with white washed walls and a tiled floor. Five long oak tables dominated the room, each one mirroring the position of a table in the great hall.

The walls were lined with cabinets and cupboards, and there was a huge fireplace at one end, presumably for cooking. He opened one cupboard and saw shelves full of white china plates and bowls. The next one contained gold and silver goblets and jugs. He tried a drawer, and found only cutlery. It was supposed to kitchen- where was all the food?

Meia turned to the girl with a puzzled expression, and saw that she was just as confused. Wait- didn't someone mention that the house elves were on strike? Maybe that would explain it. "What happened? Have the house elves left?"

"Duh," Cara replied sardonically, "didn't you hear?" She shook her head and winced, "Sorry, I didn't mean to make it sound like that. I'm Cara by the way, and if you haven't noticed, I'm rather annoyed at boys at the moment. That Orion guy just came in here and scared the living daylights out of me." she explained. She surveryed the kitchen, following the direction in which this new boy was looking in.

"Are you looking for food as well?" She asked, feeling a little hesitant as the boy hadn't said anything for a few minutes. Her stomach growled at them and she bowed so she could muffled the sound with her arms.

Meia flushed slightly, "I'm new, I only arrived a few days ago." The girl seemed to relax slightly. "And, yes, I'm looking for some food, but there's none here. Is there anywhere else we could find something to eat?" He hoped that the girl would know somewhere, because he really was hungry. He'd skipped dinner to write his dragons essay for Professor Leirbas, and now he was regretting it.

He smiled when her stomach rumbled, "I'm starving too. Do you think that there's a pantry or a storeroom somewhere?"

Cara's face suddenly lit up and she smiled, "I don't know if there is anything here," she began, "But I know there would be something in a room where it will create all the food we could ever eat! The Room of Requirement is on the 4th floor. I can show you where it is," She said happily and ran over to the door, "Come on!" She shouted from the other side of the kitchen before opening the large painting of the fruit so she could get out into the corridor.

Cara wasn't sure of the time, but there was no one in the corridors. Maybe the curfew bell had sounded and they hadn't heard it. Her auburn bangs fell into her face to her annoyance as she climbed out onto the soft, red rug. It was darker outside, and the torches had been lit along the corridor. If they weren't careful, a prefect would find them before they could even reach the second floor.

"Do you know the fastest way to get to the 4th floor?" She asked but groaned when she realised how stupid she was being, "Duh, of course you wouldn't. You only got here a few days ago...Erm...Let's get to the main entrance, and then we'll have to sneak up the stairs quickly. There is a secret passage way we can follow until the third floor. An older student went in it the other day and I followed him." Cara smiled and led the way up to the ground floor as they were slightly below it nearer the level of the dungeons. "I have a nasty feeling its beyond curfew..." she said before pushing the door open slightly, looking if the coast was clear, and pushed it further to let them both through.
