Ariana frowned for a moment but as she stared more intently at the rune, it all came flooding back to her.
"Oh, I think I know what it means now professor. I know I recognised the rune but i couldn't remem.ber what it was...Is it the letter M? Standing for Mannaz... Mankind...The Self; the individual or the human race?" Ariana asked. "It's an old letter like you said and it was used in northern Europe."
She remem.bered seeing it in a textbook she found in the library when she had first arrived at this school but she didn't think she would ever need to know it. It seemed to stick in her mind though...Strange.

Talia looked at the rune and listened to Ariana's answer, it all went over her head. She knew nothing about runes, nothing at all. She looked around and saw most of the class was also a bit stuck. She wrote the symbol onto a bit of parchment and waited for the answer.
People ask me who I am, I cannot answer except to give them a name which may not even be mine.
Nothing is more precious than memories, therefore I have lost the most precious thing I had.

As Ariana spoke, the professor looked at her, intrigued. He had never known anybody to perk up with this kind of knowledge in their very first runes lesson. Quite peculiar, he thought.
"Yes." he said bluntly. "Yes. Very good, Ariana. Now, does anybody else know why i might be showing you this rune in our first lesson?"

Ariana smiled. Maybe those books in her home did have a little use...She would have offered an answer the professor's question except for the fact that he said 'anybody else' so she kept her hands on the table, threading her quill between her fingers.
Her eyes flickered around the room looking at the other student's expressions. Most of them looked completely lost, especially Talia. Ariana liked other languages...Especially ancient ones since only some wizards could read them without any help. It was something that her parents couldn't read...Not that she had a diary but it was always useful to know a few runes.

Glad he had found a bright student, Socrates smiled. "Excellent. And don't worry, everyone," he continued, seeing the slightly concerned looks on the other students' faces, "you will soon get the hang of it!"
Next, he flicked his wand, and the students looked stunned as the stones they were holding started to change, the grew more oblong and shrunk in width, revealing a new, longer, more complicated inscription.
"This rune", he said, "is not just a letter. This engraving holds the words for an ancient spell. Now we just need it translating. Anybody?"

Ariana couldn't help but smile. This professor seemed highly intelligent, yet he forgot to answer his own question. Maybe it wasn't of great importance. Everyone knew what it meant at least.
Would they be translating runes all lesson? Ariana stared out of the window. She doubted the professor would choose her to answer any questions for a while. Maybe when he gets impatient with the others.
She focused her eyes on something outside. She didn't know what it was. It was a black winged thing...Maybe it was a bat...No, it was day light...What was it? She shook her head once she noticed it was coming closer. It was coming from the forest...Oh, it is a black winged horse...What the?
Ariana thought back to her magical creatures lesson. Then the word came to her. The horse was a threstral. But what was it doing flying around above the forest?

"No? Well, it is called "gewealdus". It is an ancient spell that is a little like the imperius curse, but not quite so terrible. It allows you to control certain parts of somebody - or if powerful enough their whole body - for a short period of time. For example, if i were to notice that one of my students wasn't paying attention," he cast a look at Ariana so that all the other students knew what he was hinting at, "then i could control their head and make it turn towards me. Of course, this would be against the rules here at NaKaoms, so i wouldn't dream of doing it to anyone."
A few giggles came from the class, but he continued. "However, i do happen to have a friend who would love to let you practice this spell on him." Socrates clicked his fingers and in a flash, a house elf appeared. He was wearing what looked like a brand new tea cosy with small pink flowers patterned across it, and his ears were larger than those of most normal house elves. "This," said Socrates, "is Matteus. He is my own house elf, so please be gentle with him. Feel free to try out your spells on him. Simply point your wand at him, think in your head which body part you want to control and what you want it to do, and say "gewealdus". And please keep it clean and not violent!"

"Oh that's not very nice," Ariana said quietly, almost to herself. She shrugged as the elf didn't seem to have any objections what so ever but what was even more surprising was, hardly any households had house elves any more. The majority had gone on strike, but maybe the professor's was too loyal to leave.
No one seemed to step up, so she took a deep breath and pulled her wand out of her robe pocket. "Gewealdus" Ariana said, but nothing happened the first time. "Gewealdus" she repeated but this time the elf's hand twitched and then moved up as high as the desk as though his arm was permantly stuck up in the air.

Orion sighed, he'd hoped to get away from houseelves at school. It was the issue he felt strongest on. He hated the fact people treated them like dirt, just like now. He still had to do what the professor said, "Gewealdus" the hand went back down and the house elf sat down on the desk. Orion was bored however, the lessons he had were fun and or challenging, but this was neither. He had considered joining one of the house elf rights movements, but could not decide which one.
When you read the history books, you are only seeing the story from the victors point of view.

"Excellent, you two, excellent!" cried the professor. "Does anybody else want to try?" Without waiting for an answer, he continued. "With lots of practice, this spell can be used very effectively. Watch."
He pointed his wand at the elf and said "gewealdus" quietly. As he moved his wand, the house elf began to walk down the isle in the middle of the classroom, looking very confused as he lost complete control over his legs. Then he sped up a little and it went into a run, before stopping dead just before he hit into the wall. He then put his hand in his pocket and pulled out a stone, turned round and threw it straight at the professor. The professor caught it in his wandless hand and released the spell with a smile on his face.

Irena sped down the hallway into the ancient runes classroom, cursing siletly under her breathe. All because of peeves she had missed the first half of the class. Now she just hoped that the professor would be forgiving.
As she quietly opened the door, she realised that there was a house-elf present, along with a man standing at the front and several, not many, students already seated. What caught Irena's attention was that the house-elf seemed to be running against his own will towards a wall and it shocked her.
Just as she was about to yelp, he stopped dead in his tracks. She then walked in, still trying to catch her breathe, and went up to the professor. 'I'm sorry, sir. Met Peeves in the hallway after I came out of the toilet and he refused to let me go', she said, hoping to catch up with her already increasing work load.
